How Walmart Pickup Works: Every Step, and What Walmart Doesn’t Publish

A store associate loading a crate of groceries into the back of a car

Walmart pickup works like this: you order on the app or Walmart.com, choose a timeslot, and a store associate shops your list and bags it. You wait for the Ready for Pickup notification, check in when you leave home, park in a marked Curbside Pickup spot, tap I’ve parked, and an associate brings the order to your car. Two steps get skipped constantly, checking in before you leave and entering your spot number, and between them they cause almost every delay.

Below is the process exactly as Walmart documents it, plus the parts that circulate online but aren’t in Walmart’s own help pages. We checked Walmart’s official pickup and delivery help article on August 4, 2026.

How does Walmart pickup work, step by step?

Walmart’s own description is short: “place an order online, choose a timeslot, and an associate will gather your items and place them in bags.” Once it’s bagged, you get a Ready for Pickup email. The check-in is where the process actually lives:

  1. Open the Walmart app, the confirmation email, or the link in your text message.
  2. Select I’m on my way. Do this before you leave the house, not in the parking lot. It’s the signal that starts them staging your order.
  3. Park in one of the marked Curbside Pickup spots.
  4. Select I’ve parked.
  5. Enter your spot number and the color of your vehicle.
  6. An associate brings the order out to you.

If the app check-in won’t cooperate, there’s a manual fallback Walmart documents: park in a Curbside Pickup spot and call the phone number printed on the parking sign (it’s also in your confirmation email). That number is the single most useful thing to know about Walmart pickup, and almost nobody notices it’s on the sign.

What do you do if your order is late?

Walmart asks you to do two things before contacting customer care, and they’re worth doing in order because skipping them is what turns a ten-minute wait into a forty-minute one:

  • Wait for the Ready for Pickup notification. Arriving inside your timeslot but before the notification means your order may still be being shopped.
  • Check in twice, once before you leave and once when you park.
  • Still waiting after both? Call the store directly. Walmart’s guidance is explicit about this: call the number in the app or at the pickup location. Chat is for other concerns, not for “I’m sitting in the car right now.”

Can you tip for Walmart pickup?

The internet is confident about this one and Walmart isn’t, so it’s worth separating the two.

Walmart’s pickup and delivery help article mentions tipping in exactly one place: delivery. It says that if you’re happy with your delivery, “you can leave feedback and add a tip for your driver.” Delivery is handled by a third-party driver, and tipping there is built into the flow.

For curbside pickup, that same page says nothing about tips at all. Plenty of articles state flatly that Walmart pickup associates are prohibited from accepting tips. That may well be true as an internal staffing policy, but it isn’t on the customer-facing page we checked, so we’re not going to assert it as though it were. The practical version: there’s no tipping step in the pickup flow, and associates generally decline cash. Don’t plan on it.

Is Walmart pickup free, and is there a minimum order?

You’ll see “$35 minimum, no fees” repeated across a lot of sites. Walmart’s own pickup and delivery help article states neither number. It describes the service and the process; it doesn’t publish a minimum or a fee schedule there.

The $35 figure may well be right. It’s widely reported and it matches what most shoppers see. It just isn’t in the policy page everyone cites, and order minimums are exactly the kind of thing that changes quietly and varies by store and membership status. The number that matters is the one in your cart at checkout. If a minimum applies to you, the app will tell you before you pay.

Pickup vs delivery: what actually differs

 PickupDelivery
Who brings itA Walmart associate, to your carA local third-party driver, to your door
TimingYour chosen timeslot, after the Ready notificationCan take up to two hours after the driver collects it
TippingNot part of the flowBuilt in: feedback and tip after delivery
Extra securityNone offeredOptional “I’ll sign for my order”; a 4-digit PIN may be required

One delivery detail worth knowing if you ever send an order to someone else: the four-digit passcode appears under the tracking status bar in Order Details once the order is out for delivery, and you have to pass it to the recipient yourself or the delivery fails.

The short version

  • Check in before you leave, not when you arrive.
  • Enter your spot number and car color. That’s how they find you.
  • The phone number on the parking sign is your fastest fix when the app fails.
  • Don’t count on tipping for pickup; it isn’t part of the process.
  • Trust your checkout screen over any article’s fee figure, including this one.

FAQ

Do you have to check in for Walmart pickup?

Yes, and twice. Select I’m on my way before you leave home, then I’ve parked once you’re in a Curbside Pickup spot. Skipping the first one is the most common cause of a long wait.

What if the Walmart app won’t let you check in?

Park in a Curbside Pickup spot and call the phone number printed on the parking sign. It’s also in your confirmation email. Walmart documents this as the manual fallback.

Can you tip a Walmart pickup associate?

Walmart’s pickup and delivery help page mentions tipping only for delivery drivers, not for curbside pickup. There is no tipping step in the pickup flow, so don’t plan on it.

Is there a minimum order for Walmart pickup?

Walmart’s own pickup and delivery help article does not state a minimum or a fee. The figure you’ll see quoted elsewhere isn’t on that page, so trust the total in your cart at checkout.

Priya’s take: The check-in is the whole thing. If pickup has gone badly for you, I’d bet on one of two causes: you arrived before the Ready notification, or you parked without entering your spot number. Do both in order and it’s a genuinely good service. And the phone number printed on the parking sign is the escape hatch almost nobody uses. When the app stalls, that sign gets you helped faster than any chat window.
